The Konica Auto S3 is a coupled-rangefinder, leaf-shuttered 35mm camera with shutter-priority automatic exposure and a very innovative Guide Number (GN) based system for automatic flash exposures. Some have classed the Konica as one of the best compact rangefinders of the 1970s, along with the Canon GIII QL17.

The Konica Auto S3 and Konica C35 FD are essentially the same camera. Their differences are only cosmetic. The Auto S3 was available only in black with the distance scale on the lens barrel displayed in feet and in meters. The Konica C35 FD came in both silver and in black with the distance scale only represented in meters.

The Konica Auto S3 is often thought of as one of the greatest little Japanese compact rangefinders. Its lens, the key element of any camera, is a Hexanon 38mm f1.8 that Modern Photography magazine (in its May 1975 issue) qualified as one of the best semi wide-angles of this speed they had ever tested. These tests produced 64 to 82 lpm at the center at all apertures.

Konica Auto S2 & III series are also worth repairing if ever in need. Whereas Canonet QL17 GIII sold well (great marketing), they have proven to be rather unreliable over time and a real challenge to repair (special tools needed, hard to access & clean blades or remove elements, complex interlocks, etc.).
